I stand to be corrected, but I think this is based on Stanier's 2-8-0 8F. I don't recognise the castings and it came in without drawings (or, indeed, an extant builder who could be consulted).
Although to a fairly advance stage, I suspect that this engine was last worked on many years ago. The rolling chassis rolls along freely, the axles run in gunmetal bushes mounted in steel axleboxes. Cylinders have piston valves actuated by Walschaert's valve gear with a screw reverser on the footplate. Steam brakes are fitted, there is an axle-driven water pump.
The tender is substantially complete, although the tank has been made in stainless steel. I've had a couple of engines come in with stainless tenders, it's a good idea in theory, but the stuff is a swine to work and tends to harden up as you go along, so the sides never seem to come out as flat as when done in brass. This one is no exception and has its share of "'umps & 'ollers".
The boiler is in copper, brazed construction and looks as if it was built to withstand the blitz.
