Excellent 3 inch scale Burrell, built to the well-regarded Plastow design and using their castings. The boiler was hydraulic tested at twice working pressure when built and a club certificate issued, the engine was tested by its builder on air but never steamed.
An exceptionally well-built engine, winner of a Very Highly Commended certificate at the Midlands Model Engineer Exhibition. As with all really good models, attention to detail sets it apart from the run-of-the-mill - all the cylinder studs identical in length with two threads showing, a link is fitted inside the safety valve spring to restrain the valves if it breaks (as per original though rarely seen on models), main bearing caps secured with a nut and thin locking nut with split pin, rubber tyres fitted to steel bands which are then fitted over the straked wheels (again as per prototype, many builders bond tyres direct to the rims to save having to make strakes).
Single cylinder engine with Stephenson's valve gear. Slide valve cylinder with mechanical lubricator, footplate-operated drain cocks, slide valve actuated by Stephenson's valve gear. Silver soldered copper boiler fed by crankshaft-mounted pump and injector, blowdown to front of foundation ring. Stainless steel grate and ashpan. Steam water lifter, hose and strainer fitted. Two speed transmission with band brake fitted to second shaft and differential behind the nearside rear wheel. Winch with steel rope and fairleads mounted to rear of tender.
Paintwork and lining is to a high standard, the number plates are sign written.
I steamed the engine earlier this week for its boiler test - it runs, as expected, just as well as it looks. Apart from thirty minutes ticking over on the bench in the workshop, the engine is new and unused.
