5 inch gauge 9F for restoration - stock code 6478

A 5 inch gauge 9F, built to the Les Warnett design and complete with drawings and copies of the "Engineering in Miniature" magazines covering the build. Started in the 1980s, the engine was first steamed in the builder's back garden in June 2009, followed by a club test in August of the same year. Playing somewhat of a second fiddle to the Britannia he built, the 9F was little used and only had one more club test - in August 2013.

Silver soldered superheated copper boiler, 100psi working pressure, feed by injector with auxiliary hand pump in the tender. Cast iron cylinders with piston valves actuated by Walschaert's gear, screw reverser in cab, mechanical lubricator.

Build quality is not bad - certainly better than the paintwork suggests, everything looks straight and the engine runs along freely. Paintwork is grim, the "working clothes" black intended as a temporary livery when built is overdue for reworking, the return cranks are only secured at their centres and need pinning with four bolts - one is loose and needs resetting, the other soon will be if not secured.
