5 inch gauge GNR Atlantic - stock code 11230

A 5 inch gauge GNR large-boilered Atlantic, Ivatt's seminal design marking the start of the railway's "Big Engine" policy. A total of 94 locomotives were built between 1902 and 1910, with one survivor - No.251 - preserved in the National Collection.

More commonly seen in 3 1/2 inch gauge to LBSC's ever-popular "Maisie" design, it makes for a handsome, rather rare engine in the larger gauge.

An older engine, this one came to us along with a 9F from a long-time customer. Since arriving we've rebushed the motionwork where required - it now runs very quietly - fitted a new injector and serviced the safety valves.

The boiler had had hydraulic and steam tests with new certification issued.

The engine steams very freely and runs particularly well in both directions with crisp, square beats, keeping itself in steam on the rolling road without need of the blower.

Paintwork is good in the main, with some age-related wear - minor re-touching over the winter would repay the effort involved.
