The rebuild included a new higher pressure boiler, and replacement of Gresley's signature three cylinder layout and conjugated valve gear with a simpler two cylinder design in the interests of reduced maintenance costs and improved reliability.
The commercially built CE marked boiler, supplied new in 2013, has had a hydraulic test with new certification issued after we'd fitted a sleeve to the water gauge - the bottom fitting is below the firebox crown - along with new glass and seals.
The engine needs a bottom end overhaul - it steams freely and runs in either direction, but with wear apparent in the motionwork and valve gear, with leakage past pistons and/or valves.
The regulator is free when cold but tightens up in steam - it needs stripping and servicing. Both injectors work but are fussy, with one clack leaking back - we'd be inclined to replace all three components.
The safety valves work reliably, the hand pump is effective.
The tender has a couple of pinhole leaks that drip - these would be easy to seal, we use a proprietary classic car fuel tank sealant which works well.
A worthwhile project - the engine is complete and running, the boiler is in good condition. Overhauled and repainted, it would make an attractive example of a rarely modelled prototype.
