Underneath the grime is a well-made Great Northern 2-2-2 to the Martin Evans design - rather less well known than Stirling's great 4-2-2s, but similarly featuring a large single driving wheel.
Work to date comprises the double frames, all wheels, horns and axleboxes, brake gear with cylinder, a well-made crank axle complete with eccentric sheaves, reversing lever with quadrant and stand, weighshaft complete with balance weights and lifting links, valve rod guides, and smokebox complete with door and handles.
There is light surface rusting on the some of the steelwork which removes easily, the crankaxle was well-oiled from new and remains bright.
There is a part set of the original build articles from "Model Engineer", drawings and castings are available from Blackgates.
