I met him one Sunday morning thirty years ago when he'd stopped in our village to take on water with his 1913 Aveling steam roller. We chatted, one thing led to another, then I got on board and helped him take it to his next stop - and so a lifelong friendship was forged. He taught me to drive a steam roller, then helped me get my own Aveling which we recovered from a park in South Wales. Back in the day we rallied all summer, then over winter worked on our engines every Sunday down at a yard in Andover.

Bob eventually bought the half size engine from me, selling his Aveling shortly afterwards. "90% of the fun of a full size engine with 10% of the trouble" was his take on it - an engine you could steam up early in the morning, drive it onto a trailer, take it to a local rally twenty miles distant, and still be back home by nightfall. It was very different to when he and I used to road his Aveling everywhere, often taking a day to get to a rally, and another day to get home.

Now 94, time came earlier in the year for my friend to downsize his engine collection, comprising model and full-size boilers, stationary engines - and the half-size traction engine. We're none of us too sure when last it was used, although the last boiler test was back in 2015. It's fair to say that Bob's engines always went well, if not kept polished to the highest degree - ten years under a sheet in a garage has not done the the brightwork any favours.

Having got it back to the workshop and given the boiler an internal inspection and preliminary hydraulic test, we couldn't wait to put a fire in it, stopping only to replace a missing pressure gauge (we'd managed to leave the original behind - the one shown is a vintage instrument of the correct range, although the red line will need to be re-positioned).

"Did it always used to run this well?" were Ashley's first words to me, having driven it around the yard. Well, yes was the answer - it really did! It will run down to a slow tickover, sounding much like a full-size engine, and goes very well, with the lightest steering we've ever come across on an engine of this size and weight; it's a delight to drive.

Cosmetically, it's shabby - the paintwork comes up reasonably well with an oily rag, the brightwork will need some serious elbow grease to get back into nice condition.

The boiler will need a full ten year inspection, with cladding off. It's made like a full-size boiler, with integral hornplates - thicknesses mainly look pretty good, the tubes are starting to look a bit motheaten although were dry on test. Unusually there are only seven, of large diameter, which may contribute to its free steaming (and will certainly make retubing a quicker job when time comes).

Mechanically, the engine runs well, with age-related wear apparent, mainly in the big end.

Road registered, with V5 document; it was originally a single speed engine, it's been fitted with an extra pair of gears to give a higher ratio for the road, along with rubber tyres.

Obviously the work of somebody who knew what they were doing, we're still no nearer to knowing who designed and built the engine - or when - than we were twenty five years ago. If anybody has more information about its history or builder, we'd be pleased to hear from you.

Perhaps the best testament to this one came from Ashley as we were leaving the works last night - "If I had the spare cash, I'd buy it to put in the engine shed next to my Fowler...".

Now that's praise for you.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1023/0094/2677/files/13234-1_a2877ca6-b27c-41e7-9173-4e9bc47341a3.webp?v=1779904706
7-14-inch-gauge-mazeppa-0-4-0t-kits-1-5-stock-code-13319
7 1/4 inch gauge "Mazeppa" 0-4-0T kits 1-5
A part-built "Mazeppa", works number 1466, comprising kits 1 to 5 assembled to rolling chassis stage. At just over seven feet long, and tipping the scales at 157kg with its tender, this was an engine conceived and built to do a serious job of work.

Obviously influenced by Stanier's four cylinder Princess Royal design, it combines that with a distinctly late-era BR cab and tender, making for an imposing sized locomotive, getting on for a foot longer than a 9F!

The engine has done plenty of work in its life, witnessed by wear in the valve gear and motionwork - it is due a bottom end overhaul in the next year or two.

The boiler has had hydraulic and steam tests with new certification issued, with only the tiniest leak past the regulator on hydraulic test, all other fittings were dry. Boiler feed was originally by hand pump and a tender mounted axle pump - the hand pump has been removed, along with pipework for the axle pump, the engine now relies on twin injectors which both performed faultlessly during the three hours the engine was in steam earlier in the week.

There is a whistle valve fitted to the fountain, although blanked off.

The boiler is very free-steaming - fitted with four safety valves, the two front ones proved more than capable of keeping to working pressure. The grate is in three pieces, with the centre section dropping down using a footplate-mounted lever making disposal very straightforward - if only more engines were designed the same way.

Fitted with vacuum brake ejector for the train and steam brakes on the locomotive, which are effective if slow to operate.

The regulator is of screw type, silky smooth in operation and giving fine control.

There is an electronic speedometer fitted, but not functioning when tested - it comprises a magnet on the rear driving wheel and sensor, not expensive to replace from the local bicycle shop if it can't be resuscitated.

The engine runs very well in forwards gear, with clear, well-defined exhaust beats. Still makes steam from cold in under ten minutes, still the best way to experience full size steam if you don't want to get dirty hands!

The bodywork has been copied from the original kit panels, but made in a superior grade of plywood (the builder having a friend in that line of business) - the original body panels, along with a set of MDF patterns are included.

"Audible means of warning of approach" are provided by a vintage horn mounted on the tiller, as well as a fabulous mechanical two-tone bell, mounted at the front of the car and operated by a foot pedal.

Engine is the well-proven twin cylinder job from the original design, with overhung crank and chain drive to the rear axle. There are a pair of mechanical lubricators, and twin water pumps, driven from the crossheads.

The boiler is the biggest departure from the original design. Formerly a Winslow-type water tube unit, we have no idea how difficult it was to manufacture but, with its all welded "spaghetti junction" arrangement of tubes, it looked pretty much impossible to repair should a tube fail.

The Lyka 2 features a conventional multitube vertical boiler, with a relatively small water capacity and large number of expanded tubes. Still a fast-steaming unit, but eminently repairable by conventional methods. An improvement, we feel.

It's fired by a standard central heating boiler burner, designed to run on domestic heating oil. It can be jetted to run on diesel, although that will cost you 50% more than heating oil; from past experience (we've had one Lykamobile which ran on diesel), it's a foul-smelling, inferior fuel!

Another improvement is the elimination of the electronic dashboard showing water level in the boiler, relying instead on a good old-fashioned Klinger water gauge.
