An ingeniously built 3 inch scale freelance steam roller, recently
arrived in part-exchange against a similar scale agricultural engine.
Motivated by a single cylinder horizontal engine with slip eccentric reversing
gear coupled to a coal-fired vertical boiler; drive is by chain to the
rear roll.
Boiler has new hydraulic test, the commercial safety valves fitted open at working pressure and don’t accumulate, however neither do they close with anything approaching reliability – they will require replacement. We’ve had the thing in steam and rolled around the yard (which, truth be told, didn’t look a great deal flatter afterwards, although Connor seemed to be having fun).
Equipped with alarmingly responsive steering, a small sofa for the driver and overall dimensions to suit the most generously proportioned of owners (not to mention making an interesting change from the line of 3 inch Burrells at your local rally).
