A 4 inch scale Ruston Proctor 3 ton SD steam tractor to the
Live Steam Models design, an attractive engine which we've had in pretty much all the scales, including
two,
three,
four,
six and
twelves inches to the foot!
A well advanced project, the builder - now into his eighth decade and still energetically pursuing interests ranging from his gauge 1 garden railway and motorcycles to Landrovers - has decided that, after twenty years work on this one, it's time for younger hands to finish the job.
Work to date is to a high standard and includes:
- Commercially built steel boiler with manufacturer's initial shell test certificate
- Cylinder assembly
- Valve gear assembly including weighshaft, reach rod, lifting links and valve rods
- Reversing lever with stand and quadrant
- Crankshaft assembly with connecting rod, valve eccentric sheaves and pinions
- Main bearings with caps
- Hornplates
- Spur gears, including differential and final drive gear guard
- Gear selector shafts and forks
- Front wheels including axle, steering chains and perch bracket
- Rear wheels including rear axle
- Steering shaft, gears and chain shaft
- Flywheel
- Water pump, modified for Scotch crank drive to suit the builder's preference
- Smokebox assembly with front ring, door, locking handles
- Chimney with spun copper cap
- Ashpan and grate assembly
- Tender
Still work to do to finish the engine, but the vast majority of expenditure is now behind it - other than boiler fittings there's not a great deal else left to buy.
