Introduction

We are always interested in buying or part exchanging live steam locomotives and traction engines, from small spirit-fired to large scale coal-fired engines - either running, part complete or in need of repair.

Everything we sell is supplied on 14 days approval: if it's not what you expected, or thought had been described, return it to us for a refund in full less shipping costs.

Engines listed on the "Locomotives" and "Traction Engines" pages are all supplied with a 90 day written "no quibble" warranty unless otherwise stated. Most have tested boilers - hydraulic test, steam test or both - and expiry dates are listed under the item's "details" tab. Some engines in these sections are not tested or steamed - this can be for a variety of reasons, including those engines which are: locomotives of gauge 1 or smaller; traction engines of 1 inch scale or smaller; particularly old or of historical interest; new and unsteamed, which would normally only have a hydraulic test.

Engines listed on the "Running restorations" page typically will require restoration work and/or recommissioning for steaming. In this category we list the "barn finds" and engines that, for a variety of reasons, may not have been steamed in many years. Some, but not all will have been tested in the works, details of any work required will be noted in the listing.

Engines listed on the "Projects" page range from part-built through to complete restorations (and pretty much everything in between) - unless specifically stated, boilers are given a visual inspection but have not been tested and are priced accordingly.

All engines listed on the website are on our premises, available for inspection by appointment.

Important note for European customers

Note that since 1st January 2021, European countries will charge VAT on the total price, including shipping, of any second hand goods imported from the UK. Typically around 20%, this will be charged on entry into the country and is in addition to the prices shown on this website. Sales of second hand goods to the UK or anywhere else in the world are unaffected.

Absolutely. All engines are held on our premises and can be inspected by appointment, giving you the opportunity to assess condition and discuss details before purchase.

These engines vary widely, from partially completed builds to long-stored examples requiring full restoration. Boilers are typically visually inspected only unless stated otherwise, and pricing reflects their condition and level of work required.

We are always happy to discuss buying back engines previously supplied by us or taking them in part exchange against another purchase.
