Station Road Steam began, almost by accident, in 2001. Back then, it was simply a man, a shed, and a German Shepherd.
More than 25 years later, that same practical, hands-on approach still shapes how we work today.
Since those early days, the company has grown steadily through continual investment in people, skills and equipment.
Today, we operate from our own 6,000 square foot facility, where we have designed and built more than 150 locomotives of our own design, produced over 100 boilers, and handled many hundreds of second-hand engines and related equipment, with customers across the UK and around the world.
From our workshop, we design and build new locomotives, overhaul and restore existing engines, and buy and sell a wide range of second-hand steam locomotives, traction engines, stationary engines and workshop machinery.
What began as a small one-man operation has developed into a fully equipped engineering facility — but the principles behind it remain unchanged.
We combine traditional engineering principles with modern manufacturing techniques, making extensive use of CNC machining, 3D printing and laser cutting to deliver consistency, accuracy and repeatability.
At the same time, we retain the practical knowledge and hands-on experience that only comes from years of working with steam in real-world conditions.
Just as importantly, we aim to be straightforward to deal with.
Clear descriptions, honest advice and ongoing support are central to how we work — whether you are buying your first engine, sourcing parts, commissioning a new build, or restoring a long-term project.
Everything we do — designing, machining, building, restoring and supplying — comes down to the people behind the business.
Their skill, knowledge and experience define who we are and maintain the standards that Station Road Steam is known for today.
