7 1/4 inch narrow gauge 0-4-2T "Tom Rolt"

In 1991 the Talyllyn Railway outshopped their then new locomotive, No.7 "Tom Rolt", an 0-4-2T incorporating parts from an Andrew Barclay well tank.

The largest, most powerful engine on the fleet, No.7 provided important support for the vintage locomotives that run on the railway - none younger than 100, with two now over 150 years old

We originally bought this 7 1/4 inch gauge model from the builder back in 2018 - we'd previously sold his super Alco in the same gauge which regular readers may remember.

At that time the engine was finished in a brighter shade, it's since been repainted into the attractive bronze green with yellow lining livery carried by the prototype.

The boiler has had hydraulic and steam tests with new certification issued. Coupling rods have been re-bushed in bronze, the vacuum ejector and gauge have been replaced - the former ineffective, pulling barely 8 inches of vacuum when it arrived with us, the latter inaccurate.

The engine steams freely and runs very well. The injectors are reliable, picking up from a remarkable 30psi right up to working pressure. The twin spring type safety valves are effective, opening and closing positively; twin whistles are fitted, of mellifluous tone.

Complete with a slate wagon style driving truck, the engine is supplied with 12 months warranty, firing irons and a starter kit of coal, oil and water treatment.

If required we would be more than happy to include half a day's training at our works on the firing, driving and disposal of the engine for a new owner.
