7 1/4 inch gauge 36XX 2-4-2T

A 7 1/4 inch gauge GWR 36XX 2-4-2T, designed by William Dean and built in three batches between 1900 and 1903 at Swindon. All were scrapped between 1930 and 1934, none surviving into preservation.

They replaced the earlier 2-4-0 "Metro" tank - a design popular in 5 inch gauge, whereas we've never seen a 36XX in one of "our" gauges before.

A well advanced project to the builder's own design, he produced CAD drawings, patterns and castings for the project from original research, including reference to period photographs and works drawings.

Work to date comprises a rolling chassis with brake gear, crank axle, cylinder assembly complete with crossheads, motion work and valve gear.

Smokebox assembly is fitted complete with chimney, door, handles and saddle.

Platework includes part-built tanks and rear bunker in brass with a steel cab.

There is a quantity of fabricated and machined parts along with the patterns for cylinder block, chimney, safety valve bonnet, hornblocks and wheels.

An interesting project and, for the more ambitious enthusiast, a chance to indulge flights of fancy in the workshop, reproducing the steam operated reverser, brakes and forward and reverse water scoops - permitting taking on water when running bunker first - of the prototype.
