1 1/2 inch scale double crank agricultural engine

The engine was built by Mr J H Ingall of Kendal, a toolmaker at the K's shoe factory in that town. An experienced model engine he had previously built a 5 inch gauge GWR 11XX, scaled down from the 7 1/4 inch gauge "Midge" design.

Both the locomotive and traction engine are believed to have had boilers built by Clarkson's of York, this engine based on the Hughes Allchin design and representing the twin cylinder engines produced in small numbers at the Globe Works.

Purchased in the 1980s at an auction in the Town Hall, Kendal, when bought the wheels were fitted with beautifully made leather tyres - unsurprising given the builder's place of employment! It was found to be a free-steaming engine, easily pulling the owner and two small children around the garden.

It remained in the owner's collection for over thirty years - in his words "It's one of those engines from a passed era produced by a craftsman whose trade was engineering first and foremost - that's why its was part of the collection for so long."
