3 1/2 inch gauge Boston & Albany D1-A 4-6-6

A 3 1/2 inch gauge Boston & Albany 4-6-6 D1-A, a small class of powerful locomotives produced in 1928 by Alco for fast commuter services - similar to our "Jazz" trains of the same period.

Featuring a short six wheel tender carried on an extension of the locomotive frames, the engine was designed to run equally well in either direction.

An older model, part dismantled some years ago - the cab and running boards are loosely assembled in the photographs opposite. It's come to us from the family of a long-time customer of ours as part of a larger collection of locomotives, including the "Feldbahn" we built for him in 2014.

Boiler showed no sign of leaks or deflection under a twice working pressure hydraulic test, we would warranty it as sound. The chassis is complete although seized, it will require some dismantling to free off. Regulator is seized and safety valves are missing, with the sheared off remains of one still in its bush.

A worthwhile restoration project; it's a rarely modelled prototype - handsome to our eyes - and a large engine in this scale, being built to North American loading gauge.

Complete with a purpose built transport/storage box.
