5 inch gauge GWR Dean Goods 0-6-0

A 5 inch gauge Great Western Dean Goods - ironically whilst the 0-6-0 tender engine was amongst the most common types working the railways in this country, it's something we rarely see modelled, often passed over by modellers for the more glamorous express locomotives.

This one is from a collection of Great Western engines that came in recently, apparently not run in some years. Somebody has been in the valve chest, we suspect in an attempt to investigate its distinctly asthmatic running - either valves or pistons (possibly both) pass steam at the moment, it runs but would be found wanting were it to encounter the skin from a rice pudding.

The boiler was built as a superheated type - flues are still there, elements long gone so currently running saturated. It wouldn't be a difficult job to make and install replacements - we'd go for stainless steel radiant (which are effective and last a long time) rather than copper flue tube elements.

Drawings and castings are still available from GLR Distributors.
