No sooner has the second of the pair of "barn find Bagnalls" sold (
"Robert Wynne"), than the first, "Lady Phyllis" returns to us sporting a thoroughly cleaned chassis, shiny new water gauge and the beginnings of a new, rather attractive livery.
A large, historically interesting engine which ran in North Wales and latterly Guernsey on a private railway - there's a
writeup of the engine in the archive here. Chassis is particularly well-made, featuring Bagnall-Price valve gear - it turns over freely.
Boiler plate thickness was checked when it first came in, the boiler itself withstanding a twice working pressure hydraulic test at that time. However, inspected out of the frames, welding shows lack of penetration and inadequate plate preparation by current standards.
Not a five minute restoration and certainly one requiring further expenditure and good workshop resources - however, completed to a high standard, the investment would be amply repaid in the value of the finished engine.
