5 inch gauge LMS Black 5 No.45156 "Ayrshire Yeomanry"

A well-built Black 5 that came in recently, part of a collection of good engines that included the excellent 3 ½ inch gauge Stanier Mogul and unpainted “Tich” we sold recently (there's also a 5 inch gauge rebuilt Scot and 3 ½ inch gauge Britannia awaiting testing in the workshop come from the same place).

Built to the well-regarded Don Young design, with superheated silver-soldered copper boiler, working pressure 90 psi, feed by twin injectors with hand pump in the tender. Piston valves actuated by Walschaert's gear with screw reverser in cab. Mechanical lubricator.

There is a regulator extension handle, allowing the engine to be driven comfortably from a driving truck behind the tender.

Steve had this one out at his club a couple of weekends ago, he reports it goes well.

One of the few Black 5s that carried a name, No.45156 was scrapped in 1968.
