5 inch gauge "Tich" 0-4-0T with tender

A 5 inch gauge "Tich" 0-4-0T, scaled up from LBSC's iconic 3 1/2 inch gauge design for beginners.

Built using a commercially made boiler supplied by Kennions, the locomotive has dummy sidetanks ballasted for extra adhesive weight, water is carried in a capacious water tank with hand pump mounted in the four wheeled tender.

The boiler has had hydraulic and steam tests with new certification issued, it's in good condition. The single pop-type safety valve works reliably, hand and axle pumps are both effective. The injector - a recent addition - proved decorative rather than functional...

On test the engine steamed freely, maintaining pressure and water level with "little and often" firing and regular top ups from the axle pump.

Disposing at the end of the day, the rear cab sheet lifts off and centre footplate removes by undoing a single screw, allowing access to the blowdown valve. The grate is hinged - removal of the pin allows it to drop, the remains of the fire can then be raked out easily.
