45mm gauge Aster Southern Pacific GS4 Daylight

A gauge 1 Aster Southern Pacific GS4, a fabulous looking, semi-streamlined design built by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

The first 20 locomotives of what eventually became a class of 28 were, remarkably, built in 1941, a period one would normally associate more with functional austerity than this rather flamboyant design.

This example has suffered damage in the past, apparently having been dropped upside down, front first. The smokebox took the brunt of it, with some damage to the cab roof and one tender bogie.

That said, although most of the cab fittings are leaking, the boiler itself looked ok on hydraulic test. It will require re-testing once dismounted from the chassis and stripped, but we would warranty as sound. The chassis still runs well in either direction.

Not a job for the beginner, but lots of potential in this one - it's a spectacular looking model, nearly four feet long with tender.
