5 inch gauge LNER B1 4-6-0

A 5 inch gauge LNER B1 to Martin Evans' popular "Springbok" design, an older engine in running order, although overdue an overhaul.

The boiler has evidence of repairs in the past, although on hydraulic test showed no signs of leaks or distortion, other than at gasket faces of regulator and wet header.

The engine steamed freely and ran better than we expected on test, workshop notes listed the following needing attention:

  • minor leaks from regulator and wet header flanges
  • driving and bogie wheel axleboxes all worn
  • safety valves open and vent effectively but don't close reliably
  • LH injector works well, although clack needs servicing/replacing
  • RH injector ineffective, clack passes back
  • leak from steam pipe to LH cylinder
  • steam passing valves and/or pistons
  • lubricator ratchet springs require replacement
  • whistle valve leaks

The valve gear has been made to a pedestrian standard - fettling would improve its appearance - although the engine runs in both directions.

The tender-mounted hand pump works reliably.
