5 inch gauge LMS Black 5

We originally bought this in 2007 from the original owner who had built it from a ModelWorks kit (you can see the original listing in the archive here). Having laid a track around his garden and steamed the engine once he decided to regauge the railway to 7 1/4 inch, buying a Romulus, whilst we took the Black 5 and Southern I3 tank.

It's recently come back from the family of the man we sold it to. The engine has been on display in the house, unsteamed in his ownership - it's in pretty much exactly the same condition as last time it was here, although now missing its original assembly instructions and boiler documentation.

Fair to say that Winson/ModelWorks engines offer virtually unlimited scope for improvement, however in the twenty years since they started making the things, a body of knowledge has built up allowing many to be completed and run well.

This one is very much as assembled "out of the box", running on air after a fashion. Modifying the valves with PTFE rings much improves their performance, something we've found an important first step in getting any of the ModelWorks piston valve engines to run.

Complete with smokebox number plate and Vulcan works plates, along with acrylic windows for the cab, unfitted from new.
