Horizontal mill engine

A horizontal mill engine, of elegant proportion, the subject of recent sympathetic restoration work started by a local engineer specialising in vintage stationary engines. His work, including the restoration of a fine old mill engine we had last year, will be familiar to regular readers.

The engine has been stripped, cleaned and repainted, brass oil cups added to the guide bars and a regulator fitted to the valve chest. However, the arrival of a large Victorian engine recently has prompted its return in part-exchange.

Lots of nice details we like on this one including the one piece turned crankshaft, split main bearing and bar turned nuts on the cast iron guide bars.

The engine runs nicely on air, with some wear apparent in main bearings, crosshead and eccentric.
