5 inch gauge Pennsylvania Atlantic

A 5 inch gauge American Atlantic, recently unearthed from many years storage at the back of a large steam workshop where the late owner also kept his full-sized locomotive.

An older engine, with substantial bearing surfaces and robustly proportioned valve gear and motionwork. Everything about its construction reflects a skilled hand at work; the finely cast wheels are crisply machined, fit and finish of valve gear and motion work is particularly good with components conscientiously stamped up "L" and "R" throughout.

There is some surface rust, although in the main the brightwork is in good condition. The engine is currently seized - pistons and piston valves will need removing to clean the bores and check rings before attempting to move the wheels - and the soldered regulator boss to backhead joint leaks under hydraulic test, the boiler otherwise looks structurally sound.

The bogie tender is complete, fitted with a hand pump and rolls freely.

We're very taken with this one - not a type often modelled in this country, American locomotives of this era featured, to our eyes, most attractive proportions.
