3 1/2 inch gauge LMS 4F 0-6-0

A 3 1/2 inch gauge LMS 4F 0-6-0, an older engine built to the popular Don Young design.

On test the engine steamed freely and ran particularly well, with crisp, square exhaust beats; it will notch up close to mid gear running forwards, and a notch or two in reverse.

The boiler has had hydraulic and steam tests with new certification issued - we also have club history. Axle and hand pumps work effectively; the injector proved troublesome despite cleaning - we suspect either a slight leak from check or steam valve is to blame.

The regulator is fairly stiff to operate when hot, and all but seized solid when cold.

Fit and finish of machined parts is good. Platework is neatly formed and fitted, the paintwork is in decent condition.

An attractive engine, one which could be run as-is, with scope for further improvement - we suspect that, amongst other things, regular running would see it much improved.
