Vintage 3 1/2 inch gauge freelance 0-6-0T

A venerable example of a freelance 0-6-0T, built in 1952 and anticipating the proportions and style of Dick Simmonds' "Achilles" design.

Built by a prolific model engineer of considerable ability, to 5 inch gauge dimensions but running on 3 1/2 inch gauge track - presumably to suit an existing railway. Whatever the reason, it makes for a heavy locomotive for this gauge, weighing in at the best part of a hundredweight.

The engine was run and driven by its builder for many years - the more remarkable given that the man had lost an arm, his facility in the workshop and on the track a lesson to the rest of us!

Last used in 2002, from when we have club certification, the boiler - now just over seventy years old - is life expired with a variety of leaks from firebox stays and foundation ring.
