3 1/2 inch gauge LMS Black 5

A 3 1/2 inch gauge LMS Black 5, in dilapidated state and requiring restoration but, underneath, a particularly well-built and detailed locomotive.

The boiler has had a hydraulic test with new certification issued. The chassis rolls freely, although currently prevented from running on air by a seized regulator.

The motionwork and wheels have all suffered light rusting from poor storage. Paintwork is worn - somebody has had a go at repainting "in situ", along with partially re-lining the engine and tender.

Machining is to a good standard, the chassis nicely built with details we don't normally see in models of this design in 3 1/2 inch gauge, including valve spindle guides, prototypical return crank, dummy washout plugs and sanding gear, rivet detail to driving wheel balance weights and spun cylinder end covers with spring relief valves.

A worthwhile project, with the potential to make a fine example of this handsome design.
