SECOND HAND
6740
A 3 inch scale Yorkshire steam wagon, the work of a prolific Hampshire engineer whose work included traction engines, wagons and locomotives. I remember his 2 inch scale Clayton steam wagon running around at the yard where I kept my first steam roller, an orange glow on the ground under its grate as it ran about seemingly inexhaustibly - I only wish all Claytons went the same!
This one is something of a one-off, built in the 1980s and fitted with a horizontal water tube boiler coupled to a twin cylinder oscillating engine, driving through a gearbox to the back axle. Boiler is copper, silver soldered construction and features an impressive-sized firebox.
The engine has obviously seen a lot of use over the years (and, to be honest, not a lot of cleaning or maintenance in recent times), however boiler is sound and it runs well on air. Pipework for the water feeds needs attention to various leaking joints, other than that it looks an easy job to put back into action. A substantial size machine, it runs out at nearly nine feet long with trailer attached, the engine itself is a hefty two man lift.
