SECOND HAND

A venerable example of "Ajax", Dick Simmonds' handsome freelance design for an industrial 0-4-0 tank locomotive.
Over fifty years old, this was an early model by a prolific engineer who went on to build other locomotives, including a 5 inch gauge LNWR George V and Standard Class 2 tank - he was also apparently the "go to" man in his club for maintenance and repair of all kinds of steam models.
The Ajax has seen a good deal of use over the years - it runs on air, motion work and valve gear is all well worn.
We have no boiler history on this one - the family of the late builder haven't been able to turn up any old certification. At this age the boiler really needs stripping and testing off the frames - however a preliminary twice working pressure hydraulic test showed no signs of distortion or structural failure, there were a few weeping stays which may take up under steam.
