5 inch gauge Caledonian 498 class 0-6-0T

A new and unsteamed 5 inch gauge Caledonian Railway 498 Class 0-6-0T, the work of a long-time customer of ours, a highly capable engineer and boilermaker with many good locomotives and nearly forty boilers to his credit.

The engine was originally being built for a friend, a change of circumstances meant it came to us at a late stage in construction back in 2019 - there are pictures and words in the archive showing the engine at that time.

Completed and painted by another of our customers, a man who has built several locomotives and stationary engines himself, the engine has been on display in his conservatory since, unsteamed.

The engine runs on air in either direction, forwards better than reverse. Motionwork is accurately made although an hour or two's work with fine emery and some paraffin would improve its current "as machined" finish.
