An exceptionally well-built 5 inch gauge LMS 2P, the work of a highly talented engineer who built several locomotives to run on his private railway, including the
Britannia "Apollo" and
LMS 2F we sold earlier in the year.
Finely detailed throughout, with steam locomotive brakes, neatly piped backhead and working water scoop on the tender.
Unsteamed in some years, the engine now requires work to recommission. The boiler has had a hydraulic test with new certification issued. The engine steams very freely and runs exceptionally well; injectors proved reliable and are backed up by an effective mechanical pump. The steam brakes work well, the ejector for train brakes pulls 15 inches of vacuum.
The safety valves are fine scale which look well, but accumulated on steam test. Using a common 1/2 x 26tpi thread they could be replaced with commercially available valves, however a more elegant solution would be to re-engineer the existing ones to provide a pop action, which would solve the problem.
There are minor steam leaks from the regulator flange and steam brake valve - sufficient to make the regulator handle uncomfortable to hold.
Most of work detailed we'd classify as "fiddly and time-consuming" rather than involving significant expense. A fine engine, which would repay the recommissioning work required.
