5 inch gauge LNER B1 4-6-0

A 5 inch gauge LNER B1 to the ubiquitous Martin Evans "Springbok" design.

We've had many dozens of these over the years - an enduringly popular design, they make for powerful, easily-maintained club performers.

This one is no exception - well-made in the first place, it's in excellent mechanical condition throughout. Fit and finish of the motionwork is very good, the engine runs very well and notches back in both directions.

The copper boiler had a fresh club test in February, with our own test undertaken in April showing no signs of leaks or deflection.

The engine didn't disappoint under steam - it makes steam freely, the safety valves blowing off promptly at 80psi, with two very reliable injectors and a hand pump for a backup.

The sombre black livery is well-applied, just beginning to show symptoms of fatigue, though the cab interior is scruffy.

A thoroughly well-sorted locomotive - we like this one.

The engine is supplied with current club hydraulic & steam certificates, issued in February 2026.
