5 inch gauge LNER L1 2-6-4T

A 5 inch gauge LNER L1 2-6-4T, an older engine built to the Clarkson design.

Dismantled for overhaul and repaint, the project stalled when the its owner bought a B1 which now occupies his time.

Whilst dismantled, the boiler was stripped for examination and hydraulic test by the club boiler inspector, before having a new regulator and cladding sheets fitted. The regulator works beautifully, smooth in operation and leak-free.

Chassis is largely untouched. It's missing one axle pump ram, rod and ecentric, the other is still fitted.

Currently loosely assembled, the engine runs on air - there's some video of it in the workshop this morning here.

A handsome, if rather rare design, it makes for a large locomotive in this gauge. We've had three or four in over the years, there are pictures in the archive - this one in 5 inch gauge came in last year and sold very quickly (by coincidence to another man who now has a B1 as well), this 3 1/2 inch gauge engine sets the standard for what a nicely finished L1 can look like.
