5 inch gauge LNWR "Super D" 0-8-0

A finely made 5 inch gauge LNWR G1 0-8-0 "Super D", a class of locomotives built at Crewe Works between 1901 and 1904.

Rarely modelled in any gauge, we've only ever seen one other in 5 inch gauge. Although a design was serialised in "Engineering in Miniature" magazine, this locomotive was constructed from the builder's own drawings - an experienced engineer, he had previously built a 5 inch gauge LMS Duchess before embarking on the G1.

A thoroughly well-sorted engine, it steams freely and run beautifully, notching up in either direction - there's some video of it on the rolling road here.

Lots of nice detailing throughout, we particularly liked the positive push-pull injector steam valves and practical tender drain.

Boiler is copper, silver soldered, fitted with a pair of radiant superheaters. Feed is by a pair of very effective injectors, with a hand pump in the tender.

The chassis has cast iron cylinders with piston valves actuated by Joy gear. Drain cocks are spring loaded automatic type, the locomotive is fitted with a steam brake.
