5 inch gauge Midland Spinner 4-2-2

A 5 inch gauge Johnson "Spinner", built to Martin Evans' elegant "Princess of Wales" design.

This one has come to us from the family of a long time customer - something of a Midland fan, he bought Ken Edge's superb Deeley 990 from us back in 2014, his collection also included a rarely-modelled Johnson Class 2 4-4-0 which arrived along with the Spinner.

Mechanically and cosmetically starting to show its age at thirty years old, the engine is due for an overhaul.

The commercially made boiler has had a hydraulic test with new certification issued, the engine has been steamed and run on the rolling road - rather gently, it must be said, as the fabricated crank axle, pressed and pinned together originally, is starting to work loose. At the moment showing only slight movement in the webs, it will get worse if left unattended - the whole wheelset needs pulling apart and reassembling - attention to wear in the eccentric straps could be addressed at the same time.

Complete with a pair of purpose built storage crates.
