7 1/4 inch gauge Bagnall 0-4-0ST

A 7 1/4 inch gauge Bagnall 0-4-0ST to the MJ Engineering design, recently arrived with us as part of a large collection of 7 1/4 and 10 1/4 inch gauge locomotives and rolling stock.

Acquired many years ago by a long time customer of ours and stored at the back of his workshop, it was never steamed in his ownership.

We've re-tubed the boiler, the engine has had hydraulic and steam tests with new certification issued.

The engine steams freely and runs, with some leakage past the valves and/or pistons - there's some video of it here. There are a variety of jobs requiring attention for next season, including:

  • Service steam pump, which currently gives no indication of wanting to work under pressure
  • Repack piston and valve rod glands
  • Service or replace whistle
Cosmetically rather shabby, a repaint over winter would make a huge difference (and, for a narrow gauge engine of this type, not that big a job).
