Alco Firefly generating set

A vintage Alco "Firefly" generating set, developed during the war to charge radio sets behind enemy lines. Originally housed in a tin case, paired with a large wood-fired steam generator.

The design used Stuart Turner's pre-war "Sirius" twin cylinder engine, it's self-starting and high speed running characteristics, with fully enclosed crankcase allowing for continuous operation with little maintenance making it highly suitable for the job.

A few of the generators have survived - we had a complete one still in its case way back in 2006 - but we've yet to see one of the steam generators.
