Stuart No.4 vertical engine

A Stuart No.4 vertical engine with Stephensons reversing gear, cast marine/generator type flywheel and balanced crank.

Built to exhibition standard by John Bertinat, an exceptionally gifted designer and prolific builder of stationary engines including many by Stuart Turner, often modified with his own ideas - the engine carries his builder's plate.

As good a quality No.4 as one is ever likely to see, we love the details on this one: elegant, tapered eccentric rods; double-nutted main bearing caps; cylinder and valve chest drain cocks; drip lubricator fitted to the top cylinder cover, and taper-pinned reversing gear with beautifully turned locking handle.

As might be expected, the engine runs beautifully, with not a trace of runout in the flywheel.

A very fine piece of engineering - certainly the best No.4 we've seen in the last twenty years.
