Stuart 5A

A finely made Stuart 5A vertical engine, fitted with Stephenson's reversing gear and complete with boiler feed pump.

Machined parts have been finished to a high standard; we like the studs showing equal threads, taper pins and keys used for components fitted to shafts, and double-nutted bearing caps.

Paintwork was well-executed originally and remains in good condition.

The engine is currently stiff to turn over, although without tight spots. We suspect built to closer tolerances than Stuart called for, not an uncommon problem when skilled machinists build steam engines.
