Stuart steam plant

A well put together steam plant, comprising a Stuart Turner No.9 mill engine and 504 boiler.

Built in 1965, the engine has been well made, complete with water pump and governor - the main bearings have been fitted with drip oilers, a nice detail we don't often see.

The boiler has its original - and now rather rare - twin tube spirit burner, but has been run latterly with a gas-fired ceramic burner.

Regular readers will know we're great fans of these - they are quiet in operation and don't produce noxious vapour which makes your eyes run. Most importantly, they can be regulated down such that steam production matches engine demand, rather than firing at full bore with more steam coming out of the safety valve than running the engine.

The plant is mounted on a tiled base, neatly piped up and complete with water tank and hand pump.
